Estate Planning Capstone

End-to-end inheritance scenario tying every prior skill together.

35–50 minutes

Inside this simulator

The capstone. A client has died and you are walking the named executor through a digital estate that spans an exchange account, two self-custodied wallets, a hardware device with no documented PIN, and an NFT collection with unclear valuation. You sequence the transition, coordinate with counsel, and produce the record.

What you'll do

  • Inventory on-chain and custodial assets from incomplete client records
  • Sequence the executor's access, valuation, and transfer steps
  • Handle a hardware wallet whose PIN was never documented
  • Assemble the estate file, including valuation basis at date of death

Skills you'll evidence

  • Building a digital-asset inventory clients will actually maintain while living
  • Coordinating custody recovery with probate timelines and counsel
  • Establishing date-of-death valuation for illiquid on-chain assets

Who it's for

Advisors serving families where a meaningful share of net worth is self-custodied and the estate plan has not caught up.

Common questions

What makes digital assets hard to transfer at death?
Control is cryptographic, not contractual. A court order compels a custodian, but nothing compels a private key — if access was never documented, the assets are unrecoverable regardless of what the will says. The transition therefore has to be engineered while the client is living.
Why is this the capstone exercise?
It requires every prior competency at once: valuation, custody mechanics, tax basis, compliance documentation, and the client conversation — under time pressure and with incomplete records.
